Jerry Hansel Obituary

Jerry W. Hansel lived an extraordinary life because he treated ordinary people with an extra level of compassion, giving away far more live than he ever expected to receive. Son, brother, cousin, uncle, husband, father and proud-and-doting grandfather, Jerry was a lifelong friend to all. With a warm “Hey, Big Guy” or “Hey, Sweetie,” Jerry’s bright smile could be heard in the music of his gentle voice, causing anyone fortunate enough to be on the receiving end of his greeting feel like he or she was, if only for a moment, the most cherished person in the room. His life was made full and sustained by his family, dear lifelong friendships, his community and his faith.

Jerry was born in Mt.Vernon, KY to Claude L. and Zelma Chaney Hansel. He and his sister, Claudette, grew up together in Mt.Vernon where Jerry would choose to live his entire life. He graduated from Mt.Vernon High School (Class of 1958) and attended Cumberland College and Eastern Kentucky University. In 1964 he married his beautiful wife, Jewell Gabbard Hansel who was his best friend and soulmate for 55 years. He was a loving father to his only son, Scott, the light of his life whom he cherished with pure joy. Jerry’s only grandson, Dylan, became the joy of his later life in 1998. Known from that point forward as “Grampsie”, he adored sharing numerous photos and long, grandfatherly-affectionate stories of Dylan’s adventures. He was treasured by his daughter-in-law, Robin, and countless others whose lives were all enriched by spending time with him.

Jerry is survived by his wife; Jewel Gabbard Hansel of Mt.Vernon. One son; Scott Hansel and (Robin) of West Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. One grandson; Dylan Hansel. One sister; Claudette Hines and (Roy) of Richmond. One niece; Gina Wiles and (Don) of Richmond, and by one nephew; Christopher Hines and (Sarah) of Lexington.
