Iris (Stevens) Young

Mrs. Iris Valeria Stevens Young of Mount Vernon, KY passed away Saturday January 27, 2024 at the Norton Women’s and Children’s hospital in Louisville, KY at the age of 84.

Iris was born on September 5, 1939 in Brodhead, KY to the late Colson and Ann (Emerick) Stevens.  She married Joseph Ray Young on December 26, 1959 and from that union came two children: Timothy Joseph and Donna Ramona. Iris was a graduate of University of Kentucky obtaining a Masters degree in English. She was employed with the Rockcastle County school system for over 20 years before retiring to grandmother status.

Iris was a charter member of the Rockcastle County Daughters of American Revolution (DAR), which was established on October 9, 1970.  She was the first recording secretary and served as Regent of Rockcastle Chapter years 2001—2007 for two terms.  She was a DAR member for 54 years in faithful service to the organization. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and had a beautiful flower garden. She also enjoyed genealogy.

Those left to celebrate her life are her husband of 64 years Joseph Ray Young; her children: Timothy Joseph Young and wife Stella of Mt. Vernon, KY; and Donna Ramona Young of Mt. Vernon, KY. Her Grandchildren Brandon Joseph Young and wife Bethany of Lexington, KY, Alexis Delisle Young of Columbus, OH. Her joy and great grandchild Bennett Joseph Young. Her Sisters: Virginia Broaddus of Brodhead, KY, Patricia Blair (Herman) of Lexington, KY; Loretta “Sunny” Rowe of Cincinnati, OH. Her brother Rex Stevens of Somerset, Ky. As well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters: Kathleen Mclaurin, Juanita Cloud & Jo Ann Reusch.  Brothers; Danny Stevens, Jan Stevens, Don Stevens, and infant Joyce Emerick Stevens.

            Funeral services for Mrs. Iris Young will be conducted at 1 PM Tuesday January 30, 2024 at the Cox Funeral Home with Bro. Luther Allen officiating. Burial will follow in the Cresthaven Cemetery.

            Arrangements are by the Cox Funeral Home where friends may visit from 11 AM until time of service on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Rockcastle Community Scholarship. A scholarship will be awarded to a graduate who is pursuing a degree in English.  Donations can also be given to the Rockcastle Regional Hematology Oncology Department at 145 Newcomb Avenue, Mt. Vernon, Ky 40456.
