Clara Jones Obituary

Mrs. Clara Mae Jones age 95, of Mt.Vernon passed away Friday February 15, 2019 at the Rockcastle Regional Hospital. She was born on July 3, 1923 in Stearns, Ky. the daughter of the late William Kenneth and Mattie “Osa” Stephens Alexander. She was a retired legal secretary. After graduating Stearns High School in 1941 she went on to attend business school in Chattanooga. She worked for the selective service system, and as a secretary for the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company. In February 1947 she married her husband Harold. On December 5, 1952 there daughter Linda was born. In 1953 they moved to Mt.Vernon to run the Mt.Vernon Bargain Store which they later purchased. She worked for attorney James Lambert, and later bought and insurance agency. After that she worked as a legal secretary for attorneys John Allen & Carl Clontz, which evolved into Clontz & Cox. After retirement in 1976 she joined the Senior Citizen’s Board and later the RTEC Board and served both boards until 2015. Clara was instrumental in starting the Mt.Vernon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as the secretary & president of the Mt.Vernon PTA. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, cats, traveling to Myrtle Beach, playing trivia, and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

            Survivors are: one daughter; Linda Clark Carr and (Jeffery) of Richmond. Two sisters; Katy Moss of Richmond, and Ruth Spitler and (Robert) of Phoenix, AZ. Two nieces; Laura Rose, and Becky West, and one special friend; Phyllis Polly also survives. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by: her husband; Harold C. Jones, and by one infant brother.

            Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Mae Jones will be conducted 1 PM Monday February 18, 2019 at the Cox Funeral Home with Pastor James Ashcraft officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery.
